Sarah Browne

Sarah Browne

Dr Sarah Browne is a pianist, vocalist and very occasional tuba player. She began instrumental training (on the clarinet) at the age of 7 and completed graded examinations in voice and piano shortly thereafter. Sarah obtained a first class honours BA Music degree from the University of Wolverhampton, whilst still doing significant freelance work in pit playing, accompanying, solo performance, and vocal and orchestral arranging. After graduation she worked briefly for BBC Radio 2 as a production assistant before deciding that teaching was her ultimate calling. She then trained at UCE/Birmingham Conservatoire, obtaining a PGCE in secondary music. Sarah has taught music to all ages; from primary schools to higher education, to leading ‘Singing for the Brain’ workshops with dementia patients.

Sarah obtained a PhD in Musicology from the University of Winchester and has published internationally in the fields of musical theatre and popular music studies. Her book on the musical, Hair and popular music is due out later in 2022. She still plays regularly for University productions and trains undergraduate students in vocal technique.
